Small-Ship Luxury Cruises: Is Yacht-Style Cruising Right for You?

Sep 23
5 min read

When many people picture a cruise, they imagine a massive ship filled with water slides, theaters, shopping areas and thousands of passengers. That can be a wonderful vacation—but it is only one way to experience the world by sea. Small-ship cruising offers something entirely different.

Depending on the cruise line, the experience may feel like sailing aboard a private yacht, staying at a luxury boutique hotel or relaxing at an elegant resort that happens to move between destinations. The ships are more intimate, the service is often highly personalized and the places you visit become an important part of the journey.

After experiencing Windstar for myself, I began to understand why so many travelers fall in love with this style of cruising. There is something special about unpacking once, watching the coastline pass by and arriving in places that feel more personal and less overwhelmed by tourism.

Small-Ship Cruising Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

Small-ship cruising includes a surprisingly wide variety of experiences.

Windstar Cruises offers a relaxed, yacht-style atmosphere aboard sailing yachts and smaller motor yachts. It feels refined without being overly formal, making it approachable for travelers who want something more intimate while still feeling comfortable and unpretentious.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection combines the atmosphere of a luxury hotel with the freedom of traveling by yacht. It may appeal to travelers who value spacious suites, polished service, fine dining and an elevated resort experience.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers an elevated and highly inclusive luxury experience. Its cruises may appeal to travelers who appreciate spacious suites, attentive service, sophisticated dining and the convenience of having many vacation expenses included in the fare. Depending on the itinerary and package selected, those inclusions may extend to shore excursions and other travel arrangements.

Seabourn and Silversea offer their own interpretations of ultra-luxury cruising, with highly personalized service, beautifully appointed accommodations, thoughtful dining and itineraries throughout the world.

Explora Journeys brings a modern, residential feeling to luxury ocean travel, with spacious surroundings, multiple dining choices and a relaxed, resort-like rhythm at sea.

Atlas Ocean Voyages offers intimate, yacht-style cruising with a strong focus on cultural and culinary discovery. Its Mediterranean and other warm-weather voyages combine elegant accommodations with smaller harbors, immersive destination experiences and opportunities to explore regional food, wine, history and traditions.

The right choice depends on what luxury means to you. For one traveler, it may mean white-glove service and elegant evenings. For another, it may mean having plenty of personal space, never waiting in a long line and stepping ashore in a quiet coastal village.

Access to Smaller Ports

One of the greatest advantages of a smaller ship is where it can take you.

Large cruise ships require ports with the space and infrastructure to accommodate thousands of passengers. Smaller vessels can often visit yacht harbors, secluded islands and coastal towns that are difficult for the largest ships to reach.

During my Windstar experience, visiting destinations such as Portofino and Porto Venere felt like part of the journey rather than simply another stop on a busy itinerary. You can step ashore, walk along the waterfront, enjoy a local meal and experience the atmosphere without always beginning your day inside a massive cruise terminal.

Small ships still visit famous cities, but their itineraries often pair recognizable destinations with smaller ports that travelers may not have discovered on their own.

A More Personal Experience

With fewer guests onboard, the experience naturally feels more personal.

Crew members may remember your name, your favorite drink or how you prefer your morning coffee. You begin recognizing fellow travelers, and getting on and off the ship generally feels less overwhelming.

The atmosphere can also be more peaceful. There are fewer announcements, fewer lines and less competition for space around the ship.

This does not necessarily mean the experience is formal or stuffy. Several luxury and yacht-style cruise lines embrace a relaxed kind of elegance where attentive service and beautiful surroundings matter more than dressing up every evening.

More May Be Included

The price of a luxury cruise can initially look considerably higher than the price of a mainstream cruise.

However, it is important to compare the complete vacation rather than only the advertised starting fare.

Depending on the cruise line, itinerary and fare selected, the price may include:

  • Specialty and à la carte dining

  • Wine, cocktails and other beverages

  • Gratuities

  • Wi-Fi

  • In-suite minibar selections

  • Marina or water-sports activities

  • Select shore excursions

  • Transfers or pre-cruise hotel accommodations

  • Butler or personalized suite service

Inclusions vary significantly between cruise lines. Regent Seven Seas, for example, is known for packaging many elements of the vacation into the fare, while another cruise line may give travelers more freedom to select and purchase individual experiences.

A higher initial fare does not automatically mean a cruise is a better value, but the lowest advertised price does not tell you what the vacation will ultimately cost either.

Looking at the complete experience helps travelers understand what they are receiving for the price.

The Destination Takes Center Stage

Large ships offer an incredible variety of onboard entertainment. Small ships usually have fewer large-scale attractions, but that is part of their appeal.

Instead of spending the day choosing between water slides, productions and amusement-style activities, you may find yourself watching the coastline, enjoying a peaceful lunch on deck or staying ashore longer in port.

Entertainment tends to be more understated. Depending on the ship, evenings may include live music, culinary experiences, enrichment programs or simply a beautiful dinner followed by drinks beneath the stars.

For many small-ship travelers, the greatest entertainment is waking up somewhere new.

What You May Not Find Onboard

Small-ship cruising is not right for everyone—and that is perfectly okay.

These ships generally do not offer the extensive attractions found on today’s largest vessels. You may not find water parks, Broadway-style productions, dozens of restaurants or activities operating around the clock.

Families traveling with young children should also look carefully at the individual cruise line. Many luxury and yacht-style ships are designed primarily for adults and may offer limited or no children’s programming.

Smaller ships can also feel more movement in open water. Travelers who are especially sensitive to motion should consider the ship, route and season when choosing an itinerary.

Is Small-Ship Cruising Right for You?

You may love this style of cruising if you:

  • Prefer intimate surroundings over large crowds

  • Enjoy cultural experiences and distinctive ports

  • Appreciate personalized service

  • Care more about the itinerary than onboard attractions

  • Want a relaxed or refined atmosphere

  • Like the convenience of unpacking once

  • Prefer more inclusions and fewer unexpected charges

  • Want to visit several destinations without repeatedly changing hotels

A larger ship may be a better choice if you:

  • Want extensive nightlife and large-scale entertainment

  • Enjoy having dozens of dining and activity choices

  • Are traveling with children who want water slides and large youth clubs

  • Prefer a casual vacation with a lower starting price

  • Want the ship itself to be the primary destination

Finding Your Version of Luxury

There is no single best cruise line because travelers define luxury differently.

Luxury may mean sailing into a small Italian harbor, dining on your private terrace or having a crew member remember your name. It may mean traveling without large crowds, exploring a destination at a gentler pace or simply having enough time and space to be fully present.

That is why choosing a cruise should involve more than comparing dates and prices. The size of the ship, service style, inclusions, itinerary and onboard atmosphere all shape the experience.

Whether you are drawn to Windstar’s relaxed sailing style, the yacht-like atmosphere of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, the highly inclusive experience of Regent Seven Seas Cruises, the ultra-luxury service of Seabourn and Silversea, the contemporary style of Explora Journeys or the cultural and culinary focus of Atlas Ocean Voyages, there is likely a small-ship journey that matches the way you want to see the world.

If small-ship cruising sounds like your kind of journey, I would love to help you compare the possibilities and find the experience that feels right for you.
